1. Wojciech Kosek, Commentary

On September 13, 1939, in Fátima, the bishop of Leiria, officially proclaiming the service of the First Five Saturdays, steered it to reparation for God who is continuously insulted by offences and blasphemies. This direction is visible in the below placed translation of the article which was published in the Voice of Fatima (Voz da Fátima) one month after that event, so important for the development of the Fatima cult, took place.

The piety devotion to console Mary, which is asked by Her in her apparitions, must be understood as the devotion directed to console the God, and particularly the Lord Jesus. The thorns which hurt the Immaculate Heart of Mary are an image of Her suffering along with Jesus, as it is visible in the dramatic scene on Calvary – Mary suffers because God in Jesus is deadly insulted, is being killed!

Because also if we console God by the renovation of our spiritual life, i.e. if we go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and bear company for Mary by fifteen minutes, while meditating in the 15 mysteries of the Rosary, in union with God and with Mary, joined with Her suffering Son, we comply with the thirst of the Immaculate Heart Mary. At that time do we first and foremost this what the God himself wishes.

Unfortunately, with the pain of the heart one ought to notice that it is a fruit of the disobedience in relation to the decision of the bishop of Leiria on 13. September 1939 that the form of Fatima’s devotion of the First Five Saturdays has in the universal pastoral practice in this day and age.

The nowadays practiced devotion of the First Five Saturdays became separated from this saint relation to God and to suffering Jesus especially, which was granted to it by the bishop of Leiria!

In the influence of the never accepted apparitions which Sister Lucia had after 1917, and particularly in 1930 in Tuy (it was so closely before the official announcement of the truth of the apparitions of Mary in Fatima, when the bishop of Leiria clearly pointed the apparitions which can be stated by him as being true: the six apparition of Mary, which took place in Fatima, between 13. May and 13. October 1917 only! [1], this worship became contracted to the reparation for the five kinds of insults committed in relation to Mary only.

Neither official act of the bishop of Leiria no official act of the Apostolic See was given to confirm that the God was really the source of the private revelation in Tuy in 1930. So it is necessary, in the agreement with the Fatima message which shows the need of reparation to the Merciful God and to Immaculate Mary joined with Him in suffering for all the sin which are simply disobedience in the face of God (cf. Gen 3:1-6), to undertake the effort to restore to that splendid „Fatima awakening of the Church” this christocentric direction which was officially imposed on it by the bishop of Leiria on 13. September 1939, and which, after all, was not cancelled by any authority of the Church in the way provided by the canonical law of the Church. It is necessary then, by our submission and obedience in the relation to the Saint Church of Christ, to make reparation to God for all the sinful disobedience and any protest which is a blasphemy measured into the God who loves us and into Mary who loves us with Him.

2. Without author, The Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The practice of the First Five Saturdays, in:
Voz da Fátima, Ano XVIII, Fátima, 13 de Outubra de 1939 N.o 205, s. 1.
(Voice of Fatima, 13. October 1939)

The offenses done against our children embitter us more than offenses done against us.

The same bears upon the most loving Heart of Immaculate Mary.

Mother of Jesus – The insults to Her Divine Son reach deep into Her Heart. So on Calvary beside the Cross, was Mary, the Lady of Sorrows.

Our Mother – Legacy of Jesus in his agony; also the hate and evil which men commit against each other are actually offenses to Mother of Heaven. That the Heart of Blessed Virgin was immensely hurt is seen in the words She said to Sister Lucia of Jesus; they are as follows:

‘Look, My daughter, at My Heart surrounded by the thorns with which ungrateful men at every moment pierce Me through their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console Me and tell that I promise to assist, at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for their salvation, all those who, in the First Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and made Me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary in order to make reparation to Me.’

Hence the devotion of the Five Saturdays of consecutive months.

What it consists of?

It consists of the confession, the receiving of Holy Communion, the reciting the Rosary and the meditating for a quarter of an hour in the mysteries of the Rosary.

The reason of this devotion

This devotion flows naturally from the apparitions in Fatima in 1917. It is the Heart of Mary, pained by the loss of so many souls, that brought Her from Heaven to Cova da Iria to talk with small shepherds.

She appeared, spoke to children. Unapproachably beautiful, but with the sad smile, as it is at the Mother full of bitterness. She gave them instructions for believers not only of Portugal but also of the whole world.

Unfortunately Her Dear Jesus is still insulted; wicked men insult Him with blasphemy, and offend Him, the good Lord, with the most horrendous sins.
Nations officially distanced themselves from God and as a consequence the terrible war broke out again which directly or indirectly affects all people and threatens to subvert the whole world in a sea of hatred and blood!

How not to feel bitternesses of the Heart of Mary, Mother of God and our Mother!?

We must seek to make reparation for Him by obeying the commandments of God’s law, obedience to Holy Church, by prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments.

It is so little what Our Lady asks us for!…

Who will not want to listen this?

Blessed and praised be the Immaculate Heart of Mary!

Visconde de Montelo, The Pilgrimage on 13 September, in:
Voz da Fátima, Ano XVIII, Fátima, 13 de Outubra de 1939 N.o 205, s. 1.
(Voice of Fatima, 13. October 1939)

After the first procession with the venerated statue of Our Lady of Fatima, the rev. Canon dr. Manuel celebrated the Mass of patients.

After the Gospel, the Venerable Prelate of Leiria entered the pulpit and officially published the devotion of the Five Saturdays which was revealed by the Blessed Virgin Mary to Sister Maria Lucia of Jesus at the time when she was in the novitiate in the Institute of Saint Dorothy.

[1]  Because until 1930 year, in the face of the episcopal canonical commission investigating the apparitions in Fatima Lucia said nothing about three apparitions of the Angel of Peace in 1916 year, and because she wrote about it only in 1937, in so called the Second Memoir, just after she received bishop’s command to say everything, it is the reason why so important christocentric and eucharistocentric apparitions were not mentioned at all in the official document of the bishop of Leiria in 13. October 1930 – they were not known by him! For their official approval, given by the Apostolic See, one ought to acknowledge the year of issue of the work Os apelos da Mensagem de Fatima (Sister Lucia dos Santos, The Appeals of the Fátima Message, 2001) written by Sister Lucia and presented to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to their approval. She obtained it! In this fundamental book of Lucia, there are contained the three apparitions of the Angel in 1916 year and the six apparitions of Mary in 1917 year. No other apparitions are not involved there, and because they have no approval of the Church, they cannot be called as the source for the pastoral practice of the Church.
